Equipping YOU with shade to protect your family and employees from Australia’s threatening UV Rays

With Australia’s hot climate and our depleting ozone layer, shade has become a priority and needs to become an essential in every Australian home, business, park, BBQ area, school and child care centre.

2 in 3 Australians are diagnosed with skin cancer by the time they turn 70.

4 years ago my wife and I started Yarra Shade Co in Port Melbourne because we believe it is imperative to protect ourselves, our children, our employees and the broader community from Australia’s harsh UV rays. We now have three installation teams, sales staff and a factory.

We are committed and dedicated to this cause, which is evident in the quality standards we uphold for every shade fabric we use. We ensure our shade fabrics:

  • have a rating of circa 90% or more for UV protection,
  • are renowned for weather resistance and durability,
  • and are Australian made whenever possible.

These qualities are of particular importance when it comes to shade structures, as they guarantee your shade structure will last the duration of its expected lifespan. On average our shade products have an expected lifespan of 15 years. With these qualities in a shade structure you are making a long-term, cost-effective investment in your families, employees’ or community’s health and well being.

Specialising in Quality

To certify our commitment to quality we incorporate 3 year warranties on all our residential work and 1 year warranties on all our commercial work. These warranties cover any installation failures and as you’ll see throughout our products there are 5 year manufacture warranties on some of our fabrics and 10 years on most of the fabrics we use.

Important Note: Beware of shade sail companies who state they incorporate 5 year + warranties as it may only include fabric deterioration and not installation failures.

Look for Building Permits

The law dictates that a shade sail company must have a Registered Builder as a director and commercial installations require a Registered Commercial Builder. This is something to check for when researching shade sail providers and make sure you ask for their registration number and to see their card.

Quality shade products can require significant technical thought, planning and skill when it comes to installation, as you deal with many different surfaces and locations. At Yarra Shade Co, we believe it is essential all our employees are trained and qualified in dealing with every installation surface or location we assign them to. A strong emphasis is placed on training and operating in a safe work environment, for our customers but also for our team.

You should ensure your shade company is registered for shade structures by calling the Building Commission on 1300 360 320.

Our Accreditation

Yarra Shade Co. is a member of the Australian Canvas and Synthetic Products Association (ACASPA). Our ACASPA Membership ensures we maintain honesty in quoting, business dealings, training and industry knowledge at all times.

To ensure we comply with all building and construction laws and to stay up to date with latest news in the building industry, we are Members of the Master Builders' Association of Victoria. Master Builders' Membership requires strict business conduct and provides us with standards to uphold. For example this includes peer assessment, which is an indicator of quality workmanship and good business practices and frequent training

Most importantly, we are Registered Domestic and Commercial Builders. Any shade sail or structure over 20 m2, 3.6m high or 2.5m forward from your house or non-permiable material (PVC) over 10m2 requires a building permit and only a registered builder can supply one. It is illegal for a shade sail to be installed by an operator who is not a registered builder with the Building Commission. Unless you are in a heritage, environmental overlay area, impacting your neighbour or the street scape, you shouldn't require planning permission for residential installations. However, some council’s may request it depending on the shade sail.

Non-residential structures and shade sails over 20 m2, 3.6m high or of a non-permiable material require a building permit. Commercial installations requiring a building permit will generally also require planning permission.

Registration must be limited specifically for Shade Sails or Unlimited. You should check that those quoting on your project are appropriately registered by calling the Building Commission on 1300 360 320.

  • Domestic Licence: DB-L 25 198
  • Commercial Licence: CB-L 25 196

Our memberships and accreditations hold us accountable to our quality standards at all times.
